A1 Window Cleaning Company History

With 40 years experience in commercial window cleaning, the Window Cleaning Company has seen many changes in the application of our trade. Back in the good, bad old days of the 1960’s there were very few office cleaning firms. All commercial and local government buildings had their cleaning done with in house labour, with the exception of window cleaning.

Back then there would have been no more than a dozen or so commercial window cleaning firms in Northern Ireland. In those days it was all chamois & scrim and ladder work.  It took 3-4 months to train the window cleaner and sometime after that if experienced enough and had ability, was he classed as a Top Man at his work. In those days window cleaning was a very dangerous occupation and a top man was prized by all window cleaning firms.

Now days most office cleaning is carried out by outside contractors, with 100 plus cleaning firms in Northern Ireland, claiming to be able to satisfy all customer needs, many fail in this claim.

Case Study:

A number of years ago a friend of mine who owns a fabricating business asked me to accompany him on a visit to a large builder supply company in Belfast; the company had a large showroom and an office block. My friend was required to go to the office; the complex’s interior was divided into sub offices with glazing going from waist high to the ceiling, on arriving I could not help but notice that the windows & partitions were in a bad state compared to the showroom windows.

Talking to the receptionist about the state of the glazing she asked if I would like to speak to the company secretary. The secretary told me that the company, that holds the cleaning contract, is also responsible for the window cleaning, but asked me to quote a price for the cleaning of the windows. I left the quote with the receptionist and phoned a few weeks later, talking to the secretary he told me that my quote was quite high compared to what the company was paying, but agreed that the windows were in a very bad condition, citing that his chairman would be away from the offices in the near future he asked if we would give the building a one off clean during his absence.

We gave the windows a good clean and on his return the chairman remarked to the secretary that when he came through the front door of the building he thought he was in the wrong place it was so bright. Well that was good news for the Window Cleaning Company as we did secure the window cleaning contract.

In a busy office people have important business to deal with, delegating unrelated items such as the general upkeep of the building to others and they don’t always have time to check if this is being carried out as it should be. The gradual deterioration of the glazing on these premises over a long period of time meant that the people working in the office became conditioned to their untidiness. It worked out that the window cleaning company responsible for the office cleaning had sub-contracted the window cleaning at an undercut price hence the poor service provided. 

Sub-contracting window cleaning by large cleaning firms is often the norm, it has advantages for them, they do not have to spend time and money on training, equipment or worry about the high cost of insurance as this is expected to be the responsibility of the sub-contractor. Granted there are window cleaners who can carry out the functions of sub-contracting, but in most cases the service to the client is poor and when things go wrong because a third party is involved it can be complicated to set things right.
